In early July 1947, during the Roswell Incident, the military unit based at Roswell Army Air Field (and subsequently the first military personnel to arrive at the UFO crash sites) was the 509th Composite Bomb Group. At that time, the 509th was the only military unit on earth with the atomic bomb. It was the same group that dropped the atomic bombs on Japan (Hiroshima and Nagasaki) in August 1945.
